Today's Route Stats:

   Distance:  5.5 miles

   Elevation Gain:  500 feet

   Elevation Loss:  100 feet

Because we didn't make it to Hotel Spring yesterday (our original goal), we weren't sure how far we would get today.  We thought that we could always stop at the large pothole (labeled Pot2) where Ben and I stayed last year.

Although I had been to Hotel Spring twice before, I had never visited the cowboy camp near the spring.  So today we stopped and walked up to the site, located a short distance up a side canyon on creek left.  There was a lot of interesting stuff at the camp:  spring beds, hand tools, and a huge can of oats (for the horses?).

Approaching Hotel Spring. Cowboy Camp Under Overhang. Rich and Ben at Cowboy Camp.

We exited Hotel Spring Canyon to the south, opposite the cowboy camp.  Once on the Esplanade, we made good time and were soon near the pothole where Ben and I stayed last year (Pot2).  We were doing well enough that we decided to keep going.  We stopped at our original destination:  Potholes below Boysag Point.  The location of this pothole was provided to me by Rich Rudow.

Exiting Hotel Spring Canyon. Mount Sinyella. Camp.

We had pretty good weather so far -- probably 70s during the day and 40s at night.  Ben would have liked it warmer, while I would have preferred colder temps.
