Today's Route Stats:

     Distance:  6.5 miles

     Elevation Gain:  400 ft

     Elevation Loss:  300 ft

Again we got a very late start.  I'm not used to getting started this late, but because we were going at a very leisurely pace, it was nice to have time for a second and third cup of coffee.

We were planning to stop part way to Scotty's, but after we were hiking for a while, we realized that the weather was obviously deteriorating.  So we decided to hike to the base of the route to the rim and cut the trip by one day.  We probably should have gone farther yesterday because today was going to be relatively long -- surely our longest day.

View Towards Jumpup Point. Kanab Point in Upper Left. Racetrack Knoll & Fishtail Mesa.

We didn't arrive at camp until sundown.  We had been looking for water, but surprisingly, we didn't see anything as we neared the end of the day.  Jorge took off ahead of the rest of us and found a nice spot with nearby water.  But it was now after sundown, and the weather was seriously threatening.  I found a partially sheltered area where I set up my tent in the dark.  It began to rain just as I finished setting up my tent.  I settled in to a sheltered spot and made dinner.  The others were scattered around and out of my sight.  I had a nice spot to keep dry as I cooked and ate dinner.  I then entered my tent and began listening to an audio book.  I was just finishing up Russian Roulette by Isikoff and  Corn.  Earlier on this trip I finished listening to What is Real? by Adam Becker.

Potholes Along Our Route. Glorious Scenery. Jorge, Kim & Ben.
