Day 5

Kanab Creek

Today's route stats:

    Distance:  7.5 miles

    Elevation Gain:  0 feet

    Elevation Loss:  650 feet

We reached the entrance to Whispering Falls (aka Slide of Susurrus, Mystic Falls, and Ponce's Pond) after a fairly short hike.  A few of us wanted to hike up past the falls via a bench that can be accessed about 400 yards past Whispering Falls.  When we got there it didn't look too difficult.  So we climbed a few hundred feet to a bench and then contoured into Whispering Falls Canyon.  What we didn't realize is that we need to climb to a much higher bench in order to be able to contour above the falls.  We ended up down in the drainage just a short distance below the falls.  Oh well, maybe next time.

We continued up Kanab without too much trouble.  But most of us decided it was easier to just walk in the creek.  Unfortunately, while doing this, I slipped and fell into the water, ruining my iPhone and destroying all my pics from this trip and the last one.  We passed the entrance to Scotty's Hollow without stopping.

The hiking difficulty jumped a notch after passing Scotty's.  There are many huge boulders to contend with, making the hiking unpleasant and slow.  When we finally reached Showerbath Spring (named by Powell), the going started to get easier.  After eating a late lunch, we continued on, not sure where we would camp.  We wanted to camp at the last water, but that is not always easy to determine.  But we did find an adequate campsite near water.
